Extraordinary tenor Allan Clayton performs the title role, joined by an outstanding, largely British cast including Jennifer France, Alice Coote and Brindley Sherratt. The Company’s illustrious legacy from Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton and Principal Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan is marked in a number of productions. Ashton’s boundless invention is displayed in two mixed programmes, with The Dream and his virtuosic Rhapsody. One of these programmes also features Les Rendezvous while the other includes Five Brahms Waltzes in the Manner of Isadora Duncan, Hamlet and Ophelia, and a guest performance by The Sarasota Ballet of The Walk to the Paradise Garden. The Sarasota Ballet will also demonstrate the genius of Ashton in the Linbury Theatre with a vibrant array of his creative output. The Royal Ballet and The Sarasota Ballet’s Ashton performances during the Season mark the opening of ASHTON WORLDWIDE, the Frederick Ashton Foundation’s five-year international festival conceived to celebrate the work and legacy of Frederick Ashton.

The programme gives pupils aged 5-11 access to curriculum-linked lesson plans, in school workshops, the chance to see live performances at the Royal Opera House, and to participate in large-scale performance opportunities locally. It features a collaboration with the Rotherham Music Service on a performance at Magna Science Adventure Centre in June 2024, with more than 1,400 primary school children performing alongside artists of the Royal Opera House in a unique celebration of art, learning and participation. The programme intends to support the creative confidence of teachers and young people in the run up to Rotherham being the first Children's Capital of Culture in 2025. Katie Mitchell directs a new production of Handel’s oratorio Theodora in January 2022 – a work not seen on the stage at Covent Garden since 1750. An international cast includes American soprano Julia Bullock in the title role and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as Irene, alongside British tenor Ed Lyon, Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński and Hungarian-Romanian baritone Gyula Orendt. Harry Bicket will conduct and the female-led creative team includes award-winning choreographer Shelley Maxwell. This exciting new take on Handel’s late masterpiece, in which love transcends political tyranny, continues The Royal Opera’s celebration of the operas and oratorios Handel wrote for Covent Garden. Mr. Conlon’s first season as Artistic Advisor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra includes three weeks of concerts, starting with an October 2021 program of music by historically marginalized composers. He returns in February 2022 for performances including Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony and the final scene of Wagner’s Die Walküre, with guest artists Christine Goerke and Greer Grimsley.

For theater, he collaborated on productions of Privacy, Macbeth and Man of La Mancha, the latter awarded as the best lighting design in a musical work at the Metropolitan Theater Awards. In dance he recently collaborated on Omphalos by the renowned belgian choreographer Damien Jalet, performed in Mexico and Germany. Carlos Álvarez performs in the title role, alongside Lisette Oropesa and Liparit Avetisyan. In 2022 the ROH will celebrate Antonio Pappano’s twenty-year career at the Royal Opera House. Pappano is the ROH’s longest serving Music Director, and during his tenure he has conducted extensive repertory including Wagner’s Ring cycle, Turnage’s Anna Nicole and in 2019 Beethoven’s Fidelio.

Since his 1974 debut with the New York Philharmonic, he has conducted virtually every major American and European symphony orchestra, and at many of the world’s leading opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera. Through worldwide touring, an extensive discography and filmography, numerous writings, television appearances, and guest speaking engagements, Conlon is one of classical music’s most recognized and prolific figures.
His directing credits include productions of Macbeth (Minnesota Opera), Carmen (Vancouver Opera), The Tales of Hoffmann (Edmonton Opera), Gavin Bryars’ Marilyn Forever (Adelaide Festival, Australia) and The Marriage of Figaro (revival at Norwegian National Opera). He is the author of seven (and counting) original librettos for companies such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company. Joel Ivany is the founder and artistic director of AtG as well as the artistic director of Opera at Banff Centre. He was one of the first five recipients of the Opera News Awards, and was honored by the New York Public Library as a Library Lion. He was named Commendatore Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana by Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic.
